I found on Google's blog the numbers I was looking for. How many unique web pages it has indexed. There are over one trillion with a t. You read that right!! Wow!!! Finding to find anything useful has been Google's [and some others less successfully] mission from the start. They get good marks but they still have a long journey ahead of them to truly make the web the tool I think it can be.
The goal still is to be able to find just what you are looking for when you want it and to have the web help you by crawling and delivering sites automatically even without you going and searching for them at all.
